SpanGUARD/HeliMARK Power Line Markers / Aircraft Warning Markers
SpanGUARD line markers make overhead power lines visible to low flying aircraft, protecting power lines and saving lives. SpanGUARD markers have been in service since 1950, secured to the power line by Preform. To our knowledge, none have ever come off the line. Over 600 utilities are using SpanGUARD markers and all are repeat customers.
| SpanGUARD/HeliMARK markers make it possible to install markers on previously inaccessible lines across rivers, or deep canyons, or environmentally sensitive areas where it is not feasible to take the lines out of service for installation of markers.
The SpanGUARD/HeliMARK, patent pending, design makes the installation of markers by helicopter or bucket easy. |
 |
Recently Haverfield Helicopter installed 102 of the Model 20 SpanGUARD/HeliMARK markers with two helicopters in
71/2 hours, including refueling time. Marking of all hazardous power lines is now feasible.
APPLICATION
The FAA recommends that 36" markers be used on high, hazardous river crossings. Smaller 20" markers are permitted on less extensive power lines or on lines in approaches to airports below 50 feet. Each marker should be a solid color: aviation orange, white, or yellow with alternating colors.

PREFORM ATTACHMENT
The secret of the SpanGUARD is its unique construction and method of attachment. SpanGUARDs
are fastened to the conductor by means of spiral formed armor rods. These spiral rods actually reinforce the conductor at the point of attachment and are completely slip-proof. They are designed to protect the conductor. SpanGUARDs can be installed in a matter of minutes without special tools. |
BETTER COLOR RETENTION
SpanGUARDs are the best power line markers on the market. Each marker is constructed of Rovel
ABS, a material that has 10 times the weatherability and color retention of fiberglass. Rovel
ABS is much more durable, and unlike fiberglass, will not crack if struck by gunshots. SpanGUARDs are available in three colors: International Orange, White and Yellow.
Span BRITE OPTION
Reflective tape can be installed on the markers to make markers more visible at night from helicopters
and small planes. The flashing lights of the aircraft make the light reflected from the marker visible to the pilot.
IMPROVED FEATURES
The new SpanGUARD/HeliMARK construction is a great improvement over the original SpanGUARD method of attachment in that it is easier to install, the design reduces freight costs and now utilities can stock standard size marker halves and install, as requirements change, various sizes of Preform attachments for various sizes of lines. The HeliMark still uses Rove I ASS plastic for greatly extended color life. The difference between the original SpanGUARD and the SpanGUARD/HeliMARK is: |
- The Preform goes outward from each side of the HeliMARK marker instead of intertwining inside of the SpanGUARD marker.
The illustration on the right shows how the Preform comes out of each end of the HeliMARK marker, outward from the marker. A permanent attachment.
- The Preform is designed specifically for the size, type and diameter of the line on which it is to be hung. The unique SpanGUARD/ HeliMARK Preform arrangement is bolted to the inside of the marker. This allows the markers to be nested for shipment, saving significantly on freight costs.
- Utilities can now stock marker halves and different HeliROD Preform assemblies for different sizes of lines they might need in a hurry.
- New HeliNUT locking assemblies are provided so that the far side bolts are installed on the ground, the markers slipped over the line clamshell-wise, and the installer does not have to worry about loose nuts, bolts and washers to assemble the marker up in the air. He simply uses a wrench to tighten the near side HeliNUTs.

CLAM-SHELL DESIGN
The new SpanGUARD/HeliMARK clam-shell design makes it easy to install power line markers from helicopters, from buckets, from bosuns chairs. First the Preform is bolted to the inside of the marker, with the Preform going outward from the marker instead of being inside of the marker. This enables the installer to almost completely assemble the marker on the ground. He installs the bolts on the far side of the marker before the marker goes into the air. This leaves only the three bolts nearest him to install up in the air.
EASY
INSTALLATION
As shown left the ROVEL ABS Plastic material is flexible enough so that the installer can open the near side clam-shell-wise, slide the marker over the line and wrap the Preform HeliRods around the line on each side of the marker by hand. The near side
HeliBolts are already in place and an air drill or wrench is used to tighten the bolts and complete the installation in a very few minutes.

SUGGESTED SPANGUARD/HELIMARK SPECIFICATION
Here is an up-to-date SpanGUARD/HeliMARK Specification, emphasizing the easy installation, advantages of the SpanGUARD construction and the advantages of our new materials; Rovel Plastic has 10 times the color retention of fiberglass and vastly improved strength over fiberglass.
" Furnish _________ Power Line Markers, Model ________ SpanGUARD, to fit
_________ (give line size, type, stranding, and diameter, ie. 1/0 ACSR,
for example). The markers are to be __________"
in diameter, International Orange, White, or Yellow. In order to insure color permanency ten times better than fiberglass, the markers shall be manufactured from Rovel Plastic. In order to be much stronger than fiberglass, the marker shall be capable of supporting a 200 lb. man without splitting. In order to insure a firm, secure
grip on the line, armor rods shall be bolted to the inside
of one half of the marker. In order to assure easy installation the rods shall extend outwardly from the marker. Heli Bolt nuts shall be furnished, enabling easy assembly on the ground, so the marker can be slipped clam-shell wise over the line, in the air, and the remaining bolts held in the holes during transport.

EHV
INSTALLATIONS
Standard SpanGUARD line markers without EHV coating treatment have been used very successfully when mounted on the power line up to 220KV or
when mounted on the static or ground wire of high
voltage systems. Tests have revealed that above 220KV, corona starts to develop at sharp edges and flanges. Therefore, the 24" and 36" EHV without flanges and with a special corona-free inside surface coating, has been developed. The EHV coating is recommended for all installations where the marker is to be mounted on an energized power line above 200KV. EHV models have been successfully installed directly on 500KV lines. |

OPTIONAL STAINLESS HARDWARE
Utilities near salt water bodies often specify Stainless Steel Bolts in order to prevent corrosion of standard galvanized bolts.
THREE COLORS
The current FAA literature suggests that three solid colors, alternated, be used on critical lines. The colors are International
Orange, Yellow and White. The reasoning is that at certain seasons of the year,
orange alone can blend in with the fall leaves of
trees. Adding yellow and white gives better contrast.
